Swallowing meals is not healthy for your pet. Eating too quickly is bad for the digestive tract and can lead to serious health problems. My lab eats as it has never seen anything! If your dog is eating like this too, you’ll need to slow him down with one DIY slow feeder for dogs.
Eating too quickly can lead to choking or choking. It can also be the start of food aggression. Peeling food can even lead to a condition known as Stomach- Dilatation Volvulus (GDV), which is a very big problem. Eating dog food quickly causes too much fluid, air, and food to fill the stomach.
This is followed by swelling of the stomach cavity. When the stomach grows, it can rotate around its axis (volvulus). This makes it impossible for anything to enter the intestines through the stomach. If so, your dog could go into shock and possibly die very suddenly.
I don’t want to scare you, but I want you to understand that this is something that you take very seriously. Most pet owners joke and laugh when their dog swallows food quickly, but it’s not funny. If your dog is a fast eater, this DIY slow dog feeder will help make his or her eat faster and could even save his or her life.
Easy DIY slow feeder for dogs
All you need to make this slow feeder is a muffin pan and some tennis balls. You may have these supplies on hand, but if not, you can pick them up at the Dollar Store for less than $ 10. Commercial slow feeders sell for around $ 20 to $ 30.
As you will see in my video guide above, a game of hiding and seek with tennis balls, dog food, and a muffin tin is a favorite in my backpack. Put a small amount of brittle in each cup of the muffin pan, then place a tennis ball (or other appropriately sized balls) over the food. Your dog will have to paw and nose at the balls to remove them in order for him to have his dinner.
You can also turn the muffin tin over and place some snacks under the cups. Your dog will need to paw and nose at the can to lift it up enough to remove its snacks. As the muffin pan moves across the floor, a few nibbles are released here and there.
Slow feeders are beneficial for any dog. Even if your dog is a slow eater, there will be additional mental stimulation from using this type of feed dispenser. Instead of just chewing food from a standard bowl, mealtime becomes game time.
