Caring for Old Dogs – Episode 59

This podcast talks about old dogs; caring for them and understanding them better. Caring for older dogs takes someone special, not like the losers who drop them off at the shelter. I talk about a lot of issues that we face with old dogs including:

WHEN DO DOGS START TO GET OLD?
SMALL – MEDIUM LARGE BREED DOGS

WHATS THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN OF DOGS

FOOD

SUPPLEMENTS

WALKING / EXERCISE

CRATING /. LIMITING MOVEMENT

THROW RUGS, STAIRS, ETC

BRINGING OTHER DOGS IN

TRAVEL CONSIDERATIONS

TEMPERAMENT CHANGES

END OF LIFE DECISION

I never understand when I see a 12 year old dog put up on Gumtree (Australia’s version of Craiglist). Why at that point after years together would you give up on them..they have faithfully been by your side all those years. My GSD is only 3 but she has bilateral hip dysplasia and severe spinal arthritis so she seems like she is 12 already😢

    1. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Enrichment and interaction remains important every day of their life.
    2. I’m a big proponent of natural feeding and fasting. My dog and I fast 3 days each month. Parasites cannot live in an empty environment. Deworming can be done by making the dog ingest toxins to kill the parasites OR fast them (with vitamins and water) for 3 days.
    3. All dogs go to heaven.

Glad I tuned in. We have a dog that is 14yo. He is getting a bit crabby at times but is still so wonderful. He has brought us so much joy. He is the best friend my wife and I could possibly ask for. Thanks again for all u do. I don’t do things for others approval either. Iam what I am. Keep doing what you do. Much appreciated. By the way, all dogs go to Heaven. All animals go. They r God’s creatures put on earth temporarily for us to enjoy, then taken back by God. Thanks again.

Thank you Robert. I’ve been following your YouTube videos for a long time here in New Zealand. Our 5 dogs range from 13 to 4 years old and this was a great podcast for me. I totally agree that we will meet all our dogs again.. I worked in rescue nfor years (hence why we still have 5 dogs) and have said farewell to too many. Thank you again

It’s heartbreaking seeing care shelter posting 10/11 year old dogs looking for homes. They must be so scared. I rescued Blue ,he is 8 year old staffi. He is my love and when my pains get bad he snuggles in to me ,it’s as if he knows I’m bad!! 💙
I agree with you,I’d prefer my dog to die natural in my arms at home too. Hopefully I will get that honor.
I would prefer to save a senior dog than have a puppy.
Thank you Robert, your advice is great.

Darn! I missed this! I have a Nine year old Rottweiler I adopted two years ago (at 7) from the pound. His lifetime owners didn’t pick him up from daycare one day- the daycare/training center kept him for two months then released him to the county pound because they work with the pound training dogs for them. Unreal. Everyone was afraid of him because of his “Rottie Rumbles” He has been the best friend and protector a single lady could ever want.
