Breeding the Best German Shepherds with Johannes Grewe and Avi Cohen – EP 102

If you want to know about German Shepherds, you want to talk to an expert. In Germany this is called a Körmeister. This person is an authority on breeding. Johannes Grewe is a Körmeister and Avi and I ask some tough questions on the topic of showline and working line German Shepherds.

The questions of what makes for a good German Shepherd and what dogs should we be breeding is always at the top of everyone’s list. Talking with Johannes is talking to one of the foremost experts on the breed. Johannes has bred, trained, judged and lived with German Shepherds for most of his life.

Avi and I get down to the serious issues. It’s a long podcast but we cover a lot of topics including the evolution of the angulated German Shepherd, the sports of IPO, IGP, Schutzhund… and so much more.

Robert with another fantastic Podcast. Breeding no doubt something that should be left for highly qualified professionals! 🙏

Ah…………the character of the dog…………….oh the GSD has SO MUCH CHARACTER, DRIVE, INTEREST in LEARNING and INCREDIBLE STABILITY and NERVES.

I think when we talk about Bob vd Wilddieben who is Henk von Gut Korten son the typical phenotype is in the line. Henk produced females mostly looking like him. My female out of Henk has big strong head, typical shape.

    Question for Joahnnes:
What are the different Feno- & Genotypes in German Shepherds?
What do you think about testing puppies for work?
In the excersise hold and bark, does the barking increase the drive or decrease stamina before the bite?

    What is his kennel called?

    Hi Robert,

Why are so many ‘breeders” breeding DM positive GSD???? Having lost TWO ( one GSD and one Czech shep) unrelated WONDERFUL Shepherds in the last 6 months and now I understand that this horrible disease can be eradicated JUST BY TESTING and then declining to breed DM positive dogs. This lack of integrity is ruining not on the breed itself but the well-being of each GSD. They suffer. I suffer and the emotional pain of euthanizing an otherwise healthy dog almost leads me to end my own life. Please comment – thank you!

Center heeling is really nice for every day situations. I keep my 2 working line shepherds inside. For sure you need to keep an extra eye in the puppy stage or put them into a crate. But I feel the same for any puppy. Every content about Shepherds (German, Dutch, Belgian) is appreciated

Fantastic podcast! Question: Will a show shepherd still be a good personal guard dog? For example: when in the house will they bark when a stranger comes to the door or on your property? Or have their temperaments drastically changed (more placid) in the past while?

What a surprise! I’ve just scanned Johannes’ CV and see he must come from Wulfen near Dorsten in North-Rhine Westphalia. And I am watching it right here in … Wulfen. Grüße aussem Pott!

    Avi Cohen, The Legend 🙌 👏 💪

Until traits are mapped, this is all a best guess. You can breed for looks because they are typically single gene traits. Temperament, biddability etc are complex multi-gene traits.

    Avi is the best!!

Thank you Mr Cabral, I love when Mr. Cohen on the show good people 💪🏽💪🏽
